Pakistan Crisis Live Updates: Pakistan is set to elect the new Prime Minister today

Security arrangements have been made before the election of the Prime Minister.

Pakistan’s Leader of Opposition Shehbaz Sharif, the 70-year-old younger brother of three-time former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, has been named as the joint candidate for the prime ministerial election to be held today.

On the other hand, Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Party (PTI) has named Shah Mehmood Qureshi as its candidate.

Voting on a no-confidence motion against the Imran Khan-led Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government took place late Saturday night in the country’s National Assembly where 174 members registered their vote in favor of the resolution that would oust Imran Khan from power.

Imran Khan’s supporters protest across Pakistan against his removal from the post of PM

Supporters of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf take out a protest rally at Liberty Chowk in Lahore against the removal of former Prime Minister and party president Imran Khan through a no-confidence motion moved by the opposition.

Accused supporters of PTI, including women and children, showed solidarity with Khan during the rally that began at 9 pm on Sunday and went on till 3 am on Monday.

Large gatherings were also reported from other parts of Punjab province including Faisalabad, Multan, Gujranwala, Vehari, Jhelum and Gujarat districts. Large crowds of PTI supporters also gathered in Islamabad and Karachi.

“Azadi fight resumes”: Imran Khan’s first comment after losing

After a humiliating defeat in a successful no-confidence vote against him, former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Sunday reiterated his claim of a “foreign conspiracy” and said “the freedom struggle begins today”. Meanwhile, Mr Khan’s party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Party (PTI) has decided to resign from the National Assembly on Monday.

Khan tweeted, “Pakistan became an independent state in 1947, but the freedom struggle has started again today against a foreign conspiracy to change power. It is always the people of the country who defend their sovereignty and democracy. “
