Islamabad: Targeting former Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran KhanGovernment, PM for failing to effectively implement National Action Plan (NAP) against terrorism Shahbaz Sharif He said that the role of the provinces in the action plan would be restored as it did not exist in the last four years and this has led to an increase in terrorism in the country.
During a meeting on Sunday, Shehbaz Sharif noted the rise in terrorism-related incidents during the last four years against the backdrop of a 56 per cent increase in the number of terror attacks in 2021.
a report by Pakistan As reported by The Express Tribune, the Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS) revealed that the militants carried out 294 attacks, killing 388 people and injuring another 606 in 2021.
Presiding over a meeting on law and order in Lahore, the Prime Minister said, “The role of the provinces in the National Action Plan will be restored, which was not present in the last four years.”
Shahbaz said that terrorism has increased in the last four years due to the neglect of the role of the provinces in NP. He slammed the PTI government for ignoring the importance of the action plan and giving a free hand to terrorism.
Army Public School was attacked on 16 December 2014. 149 people, including at least 132 children, were killed in the attack. Following the attack, a national consensus was developed that a concerted national effort be made to crack down on terrorists.
In view of this, the 20-point NAP on Combating Terrorism and Extremism was prepared by the Ministry of Interior in consultation with all stakeholders and approved by Parliament on December 24, 2014. The NAP had laid out the specifics of an anti-terrorist operation involving provincial governments in the country, which the prime minister noted on Sunday, which was allegedly ignored by the previous government.
The people involved in the meeting informed Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif about the latest law and order situation in the country.
According to the media portal, Sharif expressed concern over the increasing crime on the street during the meeting.
A briefing was also given on the eradication of terrorism and the threats posed in this regard.
The meeting comes at a time when Pakistan remains on the “grey list” by the FATF – a watchdog body involved in efforts to combat terrorist financing. FATF President Marcus Pleier recently said that Pakistan, which has been on the FATF gray list for several years, will be removed from the list only if it successfully passes the onsite visit. He said the purpose of the onsite visit is to confirm the completion of the reforms to check whether they are sustainable and irreversible.
Balochistan was the most disturbed province in 2021 with 170 deaths recorded in 103 terrorist attacks. PICSS noted that there were 162 attacks in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa in which 180 people were killed. In Sindh, it said, 23 were killed in 15 terrorist attacks while 10 people were killed in 10 attacks in Punjab.
