Pankaj Tripathi: Like 1983 World Cup, 83 films will also create history. Unique

Like the ardent cricket fans, actor Pankaj Tripathi too is eagerly waiting for Kabir Khan’s 83 to hit the theatres. The sports drama, based on Team India’s historic victory in the 1983 Cricket World Cup against West Indies at Lord’s, is all set to hit the theaters on December 24 and Tripathi is sure that the film will be a huge success in re-creating the enthusiasm of Indians. Will be Experienced after the victory of ’83.

In 83, Tripathi plays PR Man Singh, whose relentless devotion brought Kapil’s ‘devils’ to ultimate glory at the 1983 World Cup. Ranveer Singh plays the role of former captain Kapil Dev in this long pending project.

Tripathi told us, “Doing a scene in the Lord’s dressing room will always be a memory for me. We were not only recreating history but also living it and those moments will be etched in our memories forever. 1983 It was a historic moment for India but I am sure this film will make history as well.”

Talking about his meeting with Man Singh, Tripathi said, “I had gone to meet him in Hyderabad before the shooting of the film. I learned a lot from him and heard a lot of stories about the 1983 World Cup. It was a wonderful experience. There was a meeting. He is a very dedicated, focused and disciplined person. He is very fond of cricket. He has converted the third floor of his house into a huge cricket museum. Also, despite being in his late 70s Still writes about cricket.”

What was his reaction to the script of 83? The actor said, “I was excited as well as emotional after the story was narrated to me. I just told him to tell me when I want to shoot. I was really busy at that time. But I turned down a few films to take out time for 83.”

Tripathi, who is best known for his role as the dreaded crime lord, Kaleen Bhaiya in Mirzapur, said he senses a certain responsibility when taking on real-life characters, which he does when playing fictional characters. It’s not like this.

“It is easier to play fictional characters because you can add more and more imagination to those parts. But you can’t do that for real-life characters because you have to capture their thoughts and feelings through a journey that exists in reality. In 83, these people have actually gone through those experiences and we have recreated a small part of history when we played them on screen,” Tripathi said.

Over the years, Tripathi has established himself as one of the most sought after actors in the film industry and for this he has only the film fraternity and Indian audience. He said, “The entire film industry and the Indian audience have showered me with a lot of love and I am extremely grateful for it. The industry has not changed. New storytellers have come into the industry. The audience has accepted them and loved their stories. This is a good sign as it is giving better opportunities to a lot of new and talented actors. Actors like me have become busy.”
