Paris Paralympics 2024: Day 10 – HIGHLIGHTS

Navdeep Bags Silver

India’s Navdeep Singh’s silver medal was upgraded to gold after Iran’s Beit Sayah Sadegh was disqualified following a dramatic men’s javelin throw F41 final at the Paris Paralympics on Saturday.

This is India’s first-ever gold medal in the men’s javelin F41 category.

Starting the competition with a foul, the 23-year-old para-athlete from Haryana, who had finished fourth at the Tokyo Games three years ago, came up with a throw of 46.39 metres in his second attempt, propelling him to the second place. But it was his third throw that electrified the stadium.

With a monstrous throw of 47.32 metres, Navdeep shattered the Paralympic record and surged into lead, only for Sadegh to better the Indian’s mark and clinch the gold with a record-breaking effort of 47.64 metres in his fifth attempt.

However, the Iranian was disqualified some time after the end of the final, leading to the Indian athlete taking the top spot.

Simran Gets Bronze

Reigning world champion Simran finished third on the podium with a personal best time of 24.75 seconds in what was a culmination of a journey that was fraught with obstacles right from the day she was born.

The T12 classification in the Paralympics is for athletes with visual impairments.

The 24-year-old Simran was born prematurely and spent the next 10 weeks in an incubator where it was discovered that she is visually impaired.

The Indian, who became world champion this year in Kobe, Japan, faced numerous challenges throughout her life, including her father’s chronic illness and eventual passing.

She had earlier finished fourth in the 100m event.

Disappointing End

India’s para-cyclists Arshad Shaik and Jyoti Gaderiya wrapped up their Paris Paralympics journey without any medals, finishing the men’s and women’s road race C1-3 events a lap behind the leaders on Saturday.

In the women’s race, Jyoti Gaderiya finished 15th, one lap behind the leaders, while Arshad Shaik finished 28th in the men’s race, also one lap behind.

India’s campaign in the Paralympics swimming also ended as Suyash Jadhav failed to enter the final of the men’s 50m butterfly S7 event.

Prachi Yadav as she finishes eighth in the final of the para canoe women’s VL2 200m Final A with a timing of 1:08.55, while India’s only male canoe sprinter, Yash Kumar’s campaign ended after finishing fifth (1:02.03) in the semi-finals of the men’s KL1 200m.

In the last event of the day for India, Dilip Gavit finished eight with a time of 49.99 seconds in the Men’s 400m T47 final.
