Netflix’s crackdown on password-sharing has reached Indian shores, with the company announcing on Thursday that only members of a household will be able to access an account. Therefore, those watching Netflix through others’ accounts will now either have to endure the snap-off or subscribe independently. Given Netflix’s experience in other markets, it is possible that viewers may choose the latter, as they are used to watching more for free. Even though Netflix has so far not acknowledged any design behind its neglect of password-sharing, it seems to have served to popularize it. Since marking its presence in 100 countries in May, the platform has added over six million customers globally. Sure, in those markets, it did have plans that allowed the addition of such password sharers, but these won’t be available in India. This is because its prices have already been cut here. The company is expected to track devices online to restrict access within the same residence range. While this may sound offensive, it is the price of privacy that its users have to pay in order to prevent content leakage and for this market to grow beyond its infancy.
