Paytm Mall says user data ‘secure’ after cyber breach affecting 3.4 million users

Cyber-security company Firefox Monitor claimed Paytm Mall suffered a massive data breach two years ago that may have exposed the data of more than 3.4 million users, the digital payments leader said on Wednesday. The data of its users is “absolutely secure”.

A Paytm Mall spokesperson said in a statement to IANS that “the data of our users is completely secure” and “the claims regarding data leaks in the year 2020 are completely false and baseless”.

“A fake dump uploaded to the platform haveibeenpwned.com appears to be giving false warnings about a data breach on the Firefox browser. We are contacting Firefox and the platform to resolve the matter.”

According to Firefox Monitor, a security tracker of popular web browser Mozilla, “Paytm was breached on August 30, 2020”.

“Once a breach is detected and verified, it was added to our database on July 26, 2022,” it said.

According to the report, the tampered data includes phone numbers, email addresses, dates of birth, gender, geographic location, income level, names of about 3.4 million users and purchases.

The breach was provided by the data Have I Been Pund, a website that allows Internet users to check whether their personal data has been compromised.

“Although the password was not disclosed in this breach, there are steps you can take to better protect your personal information,” said Firefox Monitor.

Firefox Monitor alerted several affected users, through the website, that their data was compromised during the Paytm breach.

Several Paytm users took to Twitter with screenshots which suggest that they may have been compromised.
