Peaceful voting in Chhattisgarh’s Khairagarh by-election, 78% voter turnout till 5 pm; Congress, BJP both claimed victory

Voting in the Khairagarh assembly by-election was largely peaceful amid minor issues at some booths. Chattisgarh on Tuesday. Around 78 per cent voting took place till 5 pm.

Making the bypoll a prestige issue, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel called it a virtual semi-final ahead of the 2023 Assembly elections and was camping in the constituency for a major part of the election campaign. He had also deployed a battery of his ministers to oversee the campaign process.

Voting began at 7 am on Tuesday and concluded peacefully around 5 pm with long queues being witnessed at many booths.

The administration had set up 291 polling stations for the bypolls and around 2.11 lakh people were expected to cast their votes.

Ten candidates, including candidates from Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party and Janata Congress Chhattisgarh, were trying their luck in Khairagarh. Among them were Yashoda Verma of Congress, Komal Janghel of BJP, Narendra Soni of Janata Congress Chhattisgarh and Mohan Bharti of Rashtriya Jansabha Party.

CM Baghel He continued to express his confidence even after voting and said, “I am doing rounds and I am sure that the Congress will get the blessings of the people.” State Congress President Mohan Markam went a step ahead and said that the BJP has already lost. And the Chhattisgarh in-charge of the party is aware of this.

BJP leader and former Chief Minister Dr Raman Singh, however, said that his candidate would win the bypoll, adding that the Congress only remembered Khairagarh when the election was around the corner.

The 2018 election was an uphill battle as Devvrat Singh of Janata Congress Chhattisgarh defeated Komal Jangel of BJP by a margin of only 870 votes. Singh died in November 2021, necessitating a by-election.
