Penn steps down as Australia Test cricket captain after texting scandal

“It’s an incredibly difficult decision, but the right one for me, my family and cricket,” said Tim Paine.

Tim Paine stepped down as Australia Test cricket captain on Friday for sending inappropriate text messages to a female colleague, although an investigation by Cricket Australia’s governing body acquitted him of any breach of its code of conduct.

The governing body has accepted the resignation, a decision Penn said he did because he knew an investigation by the body’s integrity unit would be made public.

“Even though acquitted, I deeply regret the incident at the time and still am,” he told a news conference in the Tasmanian capital Hobart.

“I spoke to my wife and family at that time and am very grateful for their forgiveness and support.”

Melbourne hear the herald The newspaper said Paine’s messages sent to a colleague in 2017 included a lewd photo.

“On reflection, my actions in 2017 do not meet the standards of the Australian cricket captain or the wider community,” Paine said.

“The Board has accepted Tim’s resignation and will now work through a process with the national selection panel to identify and appoint a new captain,” Cricket Australia said in a statement.

“While the Board acknowledged that Tim approved an investigation a few years ago for any breach of the Code of Conduct in relation to this matter, we respect his decision.”

“CA does not condone this type of language or behavior.”

“Tim will be available for selection in the Test squad during the Ashes summer.”

Earlier, announcing his decision, Paine said, “It’s an incredibly difficult decision, but the right one for me, my family and cricket.”

He said that no breach of conduct was found at the same time by the investigation and Cricket Tasmania HR.

“We thought this event was behind us and I could focus solely on the team, as I have done for the last three or four years.”
