The statue of social reformer Periyar EV Ramasamy was damaged when a vehicle collided on Sunday evening.
The statues of former chief ministers MG Ramachandran, CN Annadurai and social reformer Periyar were installed by the AIADMK 20 years ago on the Namakkal bus stand road. On Sunday evening, the local people found the idol of Periyar damaged. On information, police reached the spot and covered the idols with cloth. Police force was deployed on the spot.
Namakkal police registered a case and found that a mini auto collided with the idol. The police identified the driver of the vehicle on Monday. The driver claimed that when he overturned the vehicle at full speed, he lost control and the auto hit the statue. The Police is investigating.
