Permanent campus of NIT Sikkim to be ready within next 3 years: Minister of State for Education

Union Minister of State for Education Subhash Sarkar on Sunday announced that the permanent campus for the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Sikkim is expected to be ready within the next three years, with the construction work commencing soon. Since its inception in 2010, NIT Sikkim is functioning from a temporary campus at Ravangla. The government, which is on a two-day visit to the state, announced that the construction of the second phase of the Sikkim Central University campus at Yangyang in South Sikkim would also be completed in the next two and a half years.

“I am glad that the Sikkim government has provided about 100 acres of good quality land at Khamdong, East Sikkim for the construction of the NIT campus. The construction work is likely to start soon after completing all the formalities. 500 crore has been set aside for this. While 90 acres of land has already been acquired, the remaining 10 acres are expected to be acquired soon. By when the permanent campus is expected to be ready, the government said, “within three years”.

“Another good news is that the first phase of Sikkim University campus at Yangyang, South Sikkim has already been completed at a cost of Rs 98 crore and an expression of interest of Rs 300 crore for the second phase has been published. We are hopeful that the construction will be completed in the next two and a half years and the campus will be shifted there.” Sikkim Central University celebrated its 14th Foundation Day this year.

Noting that Sikkim has taken a leading role in the implementation of the new National Education Policy (NEP), the government said that the restructuring of standalone colleges for multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary courses has begun. “To bring back out of school children (OOSC), a curriculum for elementary level has been prepared and enrollment of these 15 to 18 year old OOSC children in NIOS is going on,” he said.

The government was addressing a national conference on ‘NEP 2020: India-centric Holistic Inclusive Quality Schooling’. The conference was organized by the Board of Open Schooling and Skill Education, Sikkim, an open school board that caters to the diverse educational needs of a diverse group of students including secondary, senior secondary and pre-degree level including skill and vocational education. does.

“The Board was established last year through an Act passed by the Sikkim Legislative Assembly. This is the first board to be set up on the lines of the reforms proposed in the NEP. Presently, we are offering skill education in 11 trades and looking forward to adding eight more trades,” said Hemant Goel, President, Boss, Sikkim.
