Persons can get re-infected after recovering from Kovid-19 infections: ICMR expert

Dr. Sharma believes that vaccines and antibodies in the human body have been a weapon against the coronavirus.

In the second wave, many people who have recovered from corona virus infection are getting infected again.

A large number of fresh Kovid-19 cases are being reported daily across the country. Amidst the rising cases of Omicron type infections, there is a confusion that people who have recovered from the infection can be re-infected. According to experts, those who have recently recovered from Kovid-19 infection are not safe and can get infected again.

According to Dr. Arun Sharma, Director, ICMR-NIIRNCD (National Institute for Implementation Research on Non-Communicable Diseases), Jodhpur, a person already infected with coronavirus can also become vulnerable to re-infection. Antibodies are produced in the person after being infected and these antibodies present in the blood fight the virus only after the infection reaches the lungs.

Dr Sharma explains that the person gets the virus through the mouth or nose and showing mild symptoms it reaches the throat where it remains for several days. This condition may persist for several days. It also occurs in mild or asymptomatic cases and may not reach the lungs. Therefore, immunity in the blood does not fight infection until the person has a severe infection or the lungs are affected. Therefore, a person can be re-infected even after antibodies have been created.

Dr. Sharma believes that vaccines and antibodies in the human body have been a weapon against the coronavirus. This has helped in reducing the severity of the infection but still there is a possibility of a person getting infected with the virus again.

Wearing a mask has been a savior, but use of sanitizers, maintaining social distancing and proper nutritional diet have also been helpful in preventing COVID-19 infection, suggests Dr Sharma.
