LIMA: Peru’s President Pedro Castillo said on Monday he would replace Prime Minister Mirtha Vasquez and reshuffle his centre-left cabinet, leaving it only for him to nominate his third team of ministers after a six-month term. The stage will be ready.
“As I have always announced in my speeches, the cabinet is constantly being evaluated. That’s why I decided to renew it and form a new team.”
It was not immediately clear whether he would oust Finance Minister Pedro Franck, who is popular in the markets and maintains economic stability in the copper-rich country.
What Castillo’s new cabinet might look like is a wild card. He was sworn in in July in a far-left cabinet, sending Peru’s only currency to record lows amid investor concern.
But he softened his stance in October when he nominated Vasquez, a liberal-left lawyer and former president of Congress.
Castillo has not yet set a date for the swearing-in of the new cabinet.
Vasquez has yet to publicly address the fact that she is stepping down. Over the weekend, an aide of Vasquez – Interior Minister Avellino Guillen, who is in charge of the police – submitted his resignation.
