Bangaru Vaikal Neeradhara Koothamaippu, a water rights advocacy collective, has urged the central and Puducherry governments to link the Bahaur-Kaniyakoil road bypass highway with the city of Bahaur, which was steeped in Chola-era history. In petitions to the Union Minister for Transport and Highways, the Lieutenant Governor, the Chief Minister and others, Chairman V. Chandrashekhar said the bypass under construction on the Kanniyakoil-Bahaur road would deprive the residents of Bahaur. “We request that a circular junction connecting the bypass-highway and the Kanniyakoil-Bahaur road be constructed to connect the bypass with the historic town of Bahaur, the early Chola Empire, with the Moolanathar temple built during 800 AD- With the historical natural heritage of Bahur and its auxiliary tank systems”. The collective suggested that if a circular-junction or roundabout was not possible on the Bahaur-Kaniyakoil road, it could be considered on the Bahaur-Paricalpet road near the petrol bunk where the bypass road crosses the Paricalpet road. The petition also raised concerns over possible problems for the residents due to the construction of Bahaur-Kaniakoil bypass without proper planning. The main problem was the complete destruction of the drainage pattern, channel, field-to-field drainage system that exists in the Bahur-Tank-Drainage system due to the crossing of the bypass-National Highway section which is running parallel. drainage system. The collective has appealed to conduct a proper study to identify the natural drainage systems, canals in the area and to provide culverts of similar dimensions under bypass-highway crossings.
