Fuel prices on Friday remained stable for more than two months. In the national capital, the state government reduced Value Added Tax (VAT) on petrol in the first week of December, 2021. Soon after the development, petrol prices in Delhi became cheaper by Rs 8 per litre. Meanwhile, in November, the central government had reduced excise duty on petrol and diesel by Rs 5 and Rs 10, respectively.
On January 7, petrol consumers in Delhi will have to pay Rs 95.41 per liter for petrol. Diesel price in the national capital was Rs 86.67 per litre. The price of petrol in Kolkata was Rs 104.67 per liter and that of diesel was Rs 89.79 per litre. The country’s financial capital, Mumbai, had the highest fuel prices among metros. In Mumbai, a liter of petrol was being sold for Rs 109.98, while a liter of diesel was being sold for Rs 94.14. In Chennai, the cost of a liter of petrol was Rs 101.40 and that of a liter of diesel was Rs 91.43.
Public Sector Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) like Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) revise fuel prices daily in line with international price and foreign exchange rates. Any change in the prices of petrol and diesel is effective from 6 am every day.
International fuel prices rose on Friday after a uprising in Kazakhstan raised concerns about crude supplies from OPEC+ (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries) producers, according to Reuters. Brent crude futures rose 48 cents, or 0.6 per cent, to $82.47 a barrel, up 1.5 per cent in the previous session. US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures rose 50 cents, or 0.6 per cent, to $79.96 a barrel, having gained 2.1% in the previous session.
