Petrol, diesel prices below Rs 100 in many states after tax cut; see fuel rates

Petrol, diesel price today, petrol and diesel price Sunday, November 21 remained unchanged for almost 20 days, with only three consecutive increases seen in the current month. According to a notification by state-run Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs), the prices of these auto fuels have been kept constant for the 18th consecutive day. Petrol and diesel prices have come down sharply after the central government earlier this month decided to reduce excise duty on auto fuels. After receiving criticism from a section of the public as well as opposition parties, the central government cut excise duty on petrol by Rs 5 per liter and on diesel by Rs 10 per liter on the eve of Diwali.

Following this decision, several positions, mostly governed by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and allies, have also cut Value Added Tax (VAT) on petrol and diesel prices. With this, the price of petrol has come down below Rs 100 in most states of India.

With the Centre’s tax cut, petrol price in the national capital Delhi rose to Rs 103.97 and remained unchanged on Sunday. Petrol price in Mumbai was Rs 109.98 per liter that day, which is the highest in the metropolitan city. The price of one liter of petrol in Kolkata on Sunday was Rs 104.67. The price of petrol in Chennai was Rs 101.40 per liter in a day.

The cost of a liter of diesel that day was Rs 86.67. The Delhi government has not announced any reduction in VAT. Diesel price in the financial capital was retailing at Rs 94.14 for a liter after the price cut, and was also unchanged. The price of one liter of diesel in Kolkata was fixed at Rs 89.79. In Chennai, diesel was priced at Rs 91.43 per liter, while in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, a liter of diesel would cost Rs 90.87.

So far, around 24 states and union territories have cut value added tax on petrol and diesel. Most of the states that have reduced prices on their part are either BJP or NDA ruled states. Punjab and Rajasthan are the only two Congress-ruled states that have reduced taxes on their part. However, some Congress-ruled states had not cut VAT and demanded a further reduction in central excise duty.

Petrol and diesel prices vary from state to state depending on factors such as international crude oil prices, VAT and freight charges. Oil marketing companies update petrol and diesel prices every day at 6 am.
