Petrol, diesel prices remain unchanged today. Check fuel prices in metro cities

Petrol and diesel prices continued to rise for the 16th consecutive day on Tuesday, September 21 in most cities across the country. The last revision in fuel prices was on September 5, when the prices of both the auto fuels were cut by 15 paise each. Petrol in New Delhi was last priced at Rs 101.19 and diesel at Rs 88.62 per liter, with prices remaining the same in the national capital on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, retail sale of petrol and diesel in the other three metros of the country – Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata – continues at the same price as before. Petrol in Mumbai costs Rs 107.26 per liter, while diesel costs Rs 96.19 per litre. Significantly, on May 29 this year, the economic hub of the country became the first metro in the country where petrol was being sold for more than Rs 100 per litre.

Petrol price in Chennai city on Tuesday rose to Rs 98.96 per liter, while diesel price remained unchanged and is being sold at Rs 93.26 in Tamil Nadu capital. Motorists in Kolkata continue to pay Rs 101.62 and Rs 91.71 for a liter of petrol. for diesel. Apart from the metros, the price of petrol has crossed Rs 100 in many cities. In Bhopal, consumers have to pay Rs 109.63 for a liter of petrol and Rs 97.57 per liter for diesel.

Fuel prices vary across the country due to central excise duty and state governments levying VAT, freight charges, which are almost half of the retail selling price of petrol and diesel. Both the major fuel rates are revised on a daily basis by state-owned oil marketing companies (OMCs) like Hindustan Petroleum, Indian Oil and Bharat Petroleum. The revision is based on the average price of benchmark crude oil in the international market and foreign exchange rates, with any revisions being effected every day at 6 am.

In international markets, oil prices fell below $74 a barrel on Monday, as risk aversion by investors weighed on stock markets and boosted US dollar rates. However, this resulted in oil becoming more expensive for holders of other currencies, Reuters reported.

Meanwhile, Brent crude fell $1.42, or 1.9 per cent, to $73.92 a barrel, having hit a session low of $73.52 in early trade. US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) held steady at $70.29, falling $1.68, or 2.3 percent, after falling to $69.86.
