Philippines lawmaker proposes bill to declare “ghosting” an emotional crime

A lawmaker in the Philippines has filed a bill to declare “ghosting” – the act of ending communication with someone without explanation – an emotional offense.

according to Washington PostArnolfo Teves Jr., a member of the Nationalist People’s Coalition, said that exorcism causes trauma because it “develops feelings of rejection and neglect”. He believes that the act should be treated as abusive and should also be punished. Mr Arnolfo proposed the bill last month but shared it publicly earlier this week.

In a document titled “An Act That Declare Ghosts to Be an Emotional Offense”, the Filipino MP claimed that ghosts are a form of cruelty prevalent in today’s world. He added that technology has “changed the realm of dating faster than in previous years,” meaning people are able to break up with each other easily without considering the other person’s feelings.

The bill states that exorcism “may be compared to a form of emotional cruelty”. It also said that the act is “mentally, physically and emotionally exhausting” for the victims. This could lead to “ridicule” and “insult” and victims could face emotional upheaval caused by ghosts, Mr Arnolfo wrote in the proposed bill.

“It can be compared to a form of emotional cruelty and should be punished as an emotional offence,” he said.

In an interview with the outlet, the MLA pointed out that the emotional abuse caused by ghosts is also detrimental to the productivity of the country. He said that if the mental condition of the worker is not good then his work will be affected. The MLA said that a fine of community service should be imposed to make the criminals realize that ghosts and spirits are not good.
