Dehradun:

A rainbow-coloured sun halo was spotted here on Sunday afternoon, prompting residents to record the unusual visual spectacle on their mobile phones and upload it to social media, where it soon went viral.

A rare optical phenomenon, the sun halo or ’22 degree halo’ appears like a rainbow encircling the sun or moon within a radius of about 22 degrees.

It is caused by the refraction of sunlight into millions of hexagonal ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere, said Bikram Singh, director of the Meteorological Center.
