The off-roading scene is a pre-dominant niche segment, with only the hard-core off-road junkies opting for a complete off-road machine as their daily driver. However, in recent times, the segment has welcomed first-timers, opting for a proper off-road SUV with either 4×2 or 4×4 system, to learn the ropes of off-road driving. However, not everyone wants to own a new vehicle that costs anywhere in the north ₹12-15 lakh, especially because they don’t want it as their primary vehicle. So, the best place to look for one is in a used car space, and the Venom option, is a used Mahindra Thar, specifically, the first generation model. But, buying a pre-owned Mahindra Thar can be tricky, that is, until you go through the checklist of issues that you should look into.

Mahindra Thar NDTV

The Mahindra Thar is one of the most capable off-road SUVs available in India, and is a buyer’s favorite in the used car space.

  1. First of all, don’t be alarmed if that’s the model you’re looking for, as it’s only part of the whole experience of owning a rugged off-roader. But any major error should be thoroughly investigated.
  2. Check the underbody of the Thar carefully, to see if the model in question is damaged or bruised from the bottom, as the chances of spotting one are high. Ideally, if the undercarriage, sump guard or 4WD transfer case is cracked or damaged, move on to another.
  3. The biggest hurdle in the old Mahindra Thar was the position of the handbrake, which the owners preferred to put it in gear, resulting in a break in the actuator wire. However, it could easily be fixed.

Check for holes, cracks and tears in the soft-top version.

  4. Check for aftermarket fitments and modifications. Most of the owners are going to make several changes to the stock Thar, including changes in the electrical fitment like auxiliary lamps and LED bars.
  5. Another important check is the snorkel, off-road tires and high-lift suspension kit. Don’t be tempted to settle if you find a broken element, as it can be a big problem later on.
  6. Thar came with the most durable engine and gearbox system, but it wouldn’t hurt to check it thoroughly before investing in the car.
  7. Check the coolant level before buying a Mahindra Thar.
  8. If opting for the soft-top version, check for holes, cracks and tears, as this can cause rainwater to leak inside the car.

  9. Rust is a major concern for Mahindra Thar owners especially if the car is parked in humid weather. Some owners may have tried to hide these by repainting the area.
  10. The old Thar had a constant problem with its cooling capacity, so check any problems with the AC unit for any strange compressor sound.
