PM in Northeast: Modi to attend swearing-in ceremony of new governments in Meghalaya, Nagaland today

Addressing a press conference after the cabinet meeting, Mahant said the prime minister would reach the popular Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport here at 10 am on Tuesday and take a direct flight to Meghalaya.

The NPP-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance with 32 MLAs led by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has staked claim to form the government for the second consecutive term in the state. The BJP, an ally of the MDA, has been given a place in the new ministry.

Sangma said the PP, which won 26 of the total 60 seats, would get the bulk of eight cabinet berths, and allies UDP would get two and HSPDP one berth in the ministry, like the BJP.

Mahant said that after attending the swearing-in ceremony in Shillong, he would leave for Kohima and attend the swearing-in ceremony of the new Nagaland government.

In Nagaland, the pre-poll alliance of NDPP-BJP has 37 out of 60 seats and the state seems to be heading towards an opposition-less government as all other elected parties have unconditionally supported it.

Mahant said the Prime Minister would return to Guwahati airport tomorrow at 5 pm and would meet the Assam cabinet at the State Guest House here at 6.45 pm.

He said the Prime Minister would leave for Tripura capital Agartala at 9.40 am on Wednesday to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the Manik Saha government and return to New Delhi from there.

Saha, who was slated to be the chief minister in 2022 in a brand renewal exercise, was declared the leader of the BJP legislature party.

The Assam minister said though there is no specific information on the agenda of Tuesday’s cabinet meeting with Modi, it is expected that the working of all departments will be discussed.

He said, “The implementation of the schemes of the central government will also be reviewed.”

The preparations for the Prime Minister’s visit were discussed in a meeting of the Assam cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Mahant said that the Governor’s traditional address was also discussed on the first day of the budget session on Friday.
