Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday discussed recent issues with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres UN mission personnel attacked in CongoIn which two Indian peacekeepers were killed, and demanded a speedy investigation to bring the perpetrators of the incident to justice.

During their telephonic conversation, the two leaders discussed the recent attack on the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO), in which two Indian peacekeepers were killed. Mr Guterres offered his condolences to the families of the two martyred Indian Border Security Force (BSF) jawans as well as to the government and people of India, a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office said.

Mr Modi urged Mr Guterres to ensure a speedy investigation to bring the perpetrators of the attack to justice.

They underscored India’s enduring commitment to UN peacekeeping, with over 2.5 lakh Indian peacekeepers serving under UN peacekeeping missions, the statement said.

It states that one hundred and seventy seven Indian peacekeepers have made the highest sacrifice while serving in UN peacekeeping missions, the highest sacrifice by any military-contributing country.

Mr Modi also underlined India’s unwavering support for peace and stability in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where approximately 2,040 Indian troops are currently stationed in Monusco. A spokesman for the force said two Border Security Force personnel who were part of a UN peacekeeping operation in the Congo were killed on Tuesday during violent protests.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said he was deeply saddened at the loss of two brave Indian peacekeepers, and demanded that the perpetrators of the “outrageous attacks” be held accountable and brought to justice.
