PM Modi took part in ‘Kirtan’ at Ravidas temple, tweeted with devotees ‘Very special moment’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday paid obeisance at Sri Guru Ravidas Vishram Dham Temple in Delhi’s Karol Bagh on the occasion of 645th birth anniversary of the great saint, who is considered the founder of the 21st century Ravidassia religion and whose hymns included in the Guru. At the temple, PM Modi not only worshiped the saint, but also participated in ‘shabad kirtan’ with devotees, calling them a “very special moment”.

A day earlier, PM Modi praised the saint-poet saying that he devoted his life to eliminate evils like caste and untouchability from the society and remained an inspiration to all.

The Ravidassia community is heavily dominated in Punjab and earlier the February 14 assembly elections were postponed till February 20 to allow devotees to travel to Varanasi to mark the day. The politics of this community has started once again with Charanjit Singh Channi, who belongs to the Ramdasiya community, becoming the Chief Minister.

Guru Ravidas was born on Magha Purnima (the full moon day in the month of Magha), which is why his birth anniversary is celebrated on Magha Purnima according to the Hindu calendar.

Born in 1377 CE in Manduadih, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India, Guru Ravidas was an Indian mystic, poet, social reformer and spiritual leader who made notable contributions in the form of devotional songs, verses, spiritual teachings during the Bhakti movement. He also wrote 40 poems in the Adi Granth, the sacred scripture of Sikhism.

He actively opposed the caste system, promoted communal harmony, spiritual freedom and supported equality. Sri Guru Ravidas birth place is the name given to his birthplace. His birthplace holds special significance for all his followers. He was also the spiritual guide of Mira Bai.

Apart from PM Modi, Channi is going to Varanasi to seek blessings and offer prayers. As part of the Dalit outreach, UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will also attend the festivities.
