The Gujarati New Year, also known as Bestu Varas, marks the beginning of the Kartik month of the Hindu calendar.

On this day people go to the temple to worship the deities. People dressed in festival decorations visit their relatives and friends and wish them a Happy New Year. The day holds special significance for traders and traders as it marks the beginning of the financial year for them and hence, new accounts are opened on this auspicious day.

Entrepreneurial people, mostly engaged in business, began their bestu varas with festivities, feasts and fun. The Gujarati New Year also coincides with the Govardhan Puja celebrations in North India, which take place every year on the next day of Diwali.

The day is also celebrated by worshiping the Govardhan hill, as according to legends, Lord Krishna worshiped the hill to protect the people of the city of Mathura in Uttar Pradesh from heavy rains.
