Police as critics

Committing crime is fast becoming an extreme, humorless sport in India. Recently, a member of the fringe who is always angry filed a complaint against a novel that won the International Booker Prize a few months back. The Uttar Pradesh resident went to the police and claimed to have found “objectionable” remarks about Hindu deities in Gitanjali Shree’s writ samadhi. The complaint forced the organizers to cancel an event in Agra that was intended to celebrate their work.

Of course, readers have every right to dislike the work of Mr. But before the outrage became a public business, it didn’t extend to filing police complaints against the writers. You just couldn’t read his work. But an increasingly narrow conscience is being exercised to police art and artists in the name of religion, against the good-natured humiliation and intimacy traditions that Indian cultures have long espoused. This is a prank like a police report that India should be shut down. Instead, the UP police have reportedly said that they will read the writ samadhi and decide whether Mr. has crossed a border. Somebody tells him that he should get out of the literary criticism business.
