Police have registered 1,400 cases of drunken driving in Hyderabad and 1,300 in Cyberabad

New Year celebrations in the city witnessed a large number of violations despite the traffic police authority launching an intensive drive against drunken driving.

The Hyderabad Traffic Police (HTP) has registered a total of 1,413 cases of drunken driving. Its counterpart at the Cyberabad Police Commissionerate registered 1,314 cases during a 12-hour investigation between 6 pm on December 31 and 6 am on January 1.

The data also strongly shows that youth in the age group of 21-30 were the most intoxicated in both the parts of the city, accounting for nearly 55% of the total violations – 789 in Hyderabad and 705 in Cyberabad. And, a maximum of 84% (2,285) of total drunk driving violations in both limits were also committed by motorcyclists.

For Cyberabad police, Gachibowli (121), Kukatpally (180), Miyapur (136), KPHB (119) and Madhapur (118) police limits were the hotspots. The HTP registered cases of wrong-side driving (2,381), triple riding (513) and driving without helmet (6,242), besides checking for drunken driving.

According to officials, a large number of civil and traffic police personnel were deployed for the intensive operation. And check points were set up at strategic locations on the basis of high incidents and accident-prone locations.

Two pedestrians, including a woman, died near Banjara Hills Road. No. 3 at around 5.30 am on Sunday morning, when a car which was allegedly being driven under the influence of alcohol and at a high speed hit them and the nearby vehicles. Both the victims breathed their last on the spot and were shifted for further process.

Prima facie it has been told that the occupants of the car were students of an engineering college. the police has started to investigate.

A tense situation was also reported in Saidabad police limits, where a group of youths, who were part of a function at a function hall in Champapet, attacked each other with bottles and broke furniture. The police registered a case.
