Political ups and downs part of democracy: Sharad Pawar

Days after predicting the resignation of at least 13 Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLAs ahead of the Uttar Pradesh state polls, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar on Thursday said political ups and downs are part of democracy. and no one can retain power. Eternity once people decide to remove it.

“BJP is a party which has no interest in the welfare of common people and that party has everything at the Centre. There are ups and downs in politics. Sometimes they take you to the highest point. But if common people decide to bring you down, then no one can stand in the face of this collective power,” Mr Pawar said.

He was speaking at a party event where several leaders from BJP, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), Republican Party of India and Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) joined the NCP.

“If anyone had seen Uttar Pradesh 15 days back, the BJP was telling everyone that this state has been done for them and is gathering dust,” he said. But now there is not a single day when people are not leaving this party and joining another. MLAs and ministers are resigning and Goa will see the same.

Two days ago, Mr Pawar had said that the people of UP want change and predicted that at least 13 MLAs would quit the BJP in the coming days. According to reports, around 12 MLAs have already resigned from the party and are set to join Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party (SP).
