Porsche has been at the forefront of automotive technology for decades. Its cars are characterized by loud and loud noises, but now Porsche has embraced the electric powertrain with the Taycan – so it’s also adopting a quieter cabin. To take it further, it has developed a special glass that will keep things cool inside the cabin. This new glass is made using a new thermal process that makes it noise-insulated and will be available for all four-door models.

Porsche’s Juergen Ochs explained that when the car enters a highway tunnel filled with concrete, there are huge reflections and the sound bounces back specifically towards the car. This effect is compounded when the vehicle speeds up, and so the infotainment system has a feature that dynamically increases the volume of the music as the car speeds up.

“The type of glass in a vehicle plays an important role in acoustic comfort. And its effect can be precisely measured — whether on an open section of road or in a tunnel,” Ochs said.

According to Porsche, this glass is different from the typical single-layer safety glass that is often used on the sides and rear of vehicles. This glass has five layers – three layers are film and then an additional middle layer of polyvinyl butyrate (PVB) which has special acoustic properties – this helps absorb the vibrations of the surrounding glass.

Porsche estimates that it can reduce outside noise by about 7.3 percent in the frequency range from 630 Hz to 6.3 kHz. This range is very effective for the human ear as its optimum range is 3.5 to 4 kHz. Outside noises such as police, fire engines and ambulance sirens operate between 360 and 630 Hz window.

“It doesn’t sound like much, but everyone who has ever tested the difference in driving conditions is impressed,” Ochs elaborated. This glass will also be installed in the triangle panel and rear window.
