Thousands of reports of pedophilia in the Catholic Church have emerged around the world and now Pope Francis is under pressure to deal with the scandal.

A Portugal inquiry commissioned by the church in the staunchly Catholic country published its findings last year after hearing more than 500 complaints.

Commission head Pedro Strech told a press conference in Lisbon, “This evidence allows to establish a large network of show, at least 4,815.” Several senior church officials also took part in the PC.

Child psychiatrist Streich said it would now be difficult for Portugal to ignore child sexual abuse or the trauma it causes. “I choose from this difficult and dramatic task,” said Bishop José Ornelas, head of the Portuguese Conference of Special Religions (CEP).

“And we hope it marks a new beginning,” Bishop said after attending the presentation of the report. Monsignor Ornelas, who expressed “condolences to the victims”, is scheduled to hold a press conference afterwards.
