Post Covid, IIT-G registers 1/4th rise in student numbers – Times of India

GUWAHATI: The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT-G) recorded a one-fourth increase in the number of students at the premier institute of technology with the resumption of physical classes and research activities in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We have seen a proportionate increase in the number of students in both undergraduate and postgraduate sections. In the time of pandemic many new programs were planned and there was a rush to grab these,” Dean, Public Relations & Branding, at IIT-G, Prof. of God. Iyer told

Before the outbreak of the pandemic, there were about 5,700 students and scholars on campus, while that number has now reached 7,000. Iyer said that overall the academic environment is very vibrant compared to what he has seen in the last two years. During the peak of all three waves, fewer than 50 students were on campus, mainly in laboratories maintaining high-end research facilities. The institute decided to call back all the students to the campus by March 21 and at present, there are no COVID cases on the campus.

After the opening of the institute in a phased manner, physical classes, laboratories and extra-curricular activities have fully resumed and are running at full capacity. Research activities are going on at a brisk pace and laboratories are working at their full strength.

The 26th edition of Alcheringa, the annual cultural festival of IIT Guwahati, held from March 11 to 13, had boosted the confidence of the IIT-G fraternity. Despite the massive participation of faculty members, students and non-teaching staff in the gala event, where eminent artistes from different parts of the country performed during the four-day festival, Kovid did not return to the campus again.

A group of second year students who came to the campus for the first time after entering IIT Guwahati said, “It is exciting for us to be on campus! We were memorizing all the body lessons and meeting our classmates and batchmates during the last two years. We are prepared to learn in this campus environment. ,

While the first phase of return to campus began between February 19 and March 10 with the admission of students of all PhD and dual degrees as well as BTech/BDS final year (2018 batch) and previous batches, the final or phase IV concludes. Expressing satisfaction over the resumption of the institute’s activities at their regular pace, IIT-G Director Prof TG Sitaram said, “I welcome this return to the bustle of students on our campus after two years of online learning.
