Supreme Court names a panel headed by Justice (retd) AR Dave along with former chief SY Qureshi Election Commissioner, and Bhaskar Ganguly, former captain of the Indian football team, as members.

“I thank the Hon’ble Supreme Court for finalizing a long pending issue since 2017. I wish the CoA all the best, and request them to fulfill their responsibilities of providing a new Constitution in line with the national complete. game Code,” Patel said in a statement.

“A quick resolution and a newly elected body will work in the best interest of Indian football.”

He said that the AIFF constitution is already comprehensively following the code of sport keeping in mind the rules of AFC and FIFA.

Patel also admitted that he was not eligible for re-election under the Sports Code.

“The term of the elected committee had ended in December 2020, and we had approached the Hon’ble Supreme Court in November 2020 for speedy resolution of the matter and appropriate directions.

“The AIFF constitution broadly follows the Sports Code 2011 for age and tenure limits, and so I was by no means going to step down, nor was I eligible for re-election.”

Patel’s third term ended in December 2020, but he stuck to a SC case pending since 2017 to extend the term of his executive committee, refusing to hold elections until the issue of a new constitution is settled by the Supreme Court .

This is the first time that a CoA will take charge of the AIFF, which is unprecedented in its 85-year-old history, during which time the Patel-led government never failed to hold its elections until the trend was overcome.

“The earlier executive committee of AIFF (headed by Patel) is not there after today’s Supreme Court order, it is gone. The Supreme Court asked us to take charge immediately, so as soon as we get the court order, we will take charge, talk to each other and outline our course of action.

He said the new constitution is expected to be approved by the Supreme Court by July 30 and the new office bearers of the AIFF may be elected in September-October.

Patel, a former Union minister, served as the acting president for a year after Mukhiya Dasmunshi fell ill for a long time.

He took over as full-time chairman in October 2009 before being re-elected to the top post in December 2012 and 2016. His three terms and 12 years as AIFF president ended in December 2020, the maximum allowed to a National Sports Federation (NSF). ) Head under the Sports Code.

Prior to Patel, the then Congress party veteran, Dasmunshi served as the AIFF president from 1989 to 2008.

Patel said, “I am always available for service to take Indian football forward together, and once again express my gratitude for the love and affection and respect received for serving the sport.”
