Predictive touchscreen: all you need to know

The amount of information a driver can get from a touchscreen is insane! However, there’s a new technology that’s picking up steam – say hello to the “no-touch” touchscreen! What are Predictive Touchscreens?

A predictive touchscreen is a kind of “no-touch” touchscreen. These touchscreens, along with various interactive displays or control panels on the dashboard, combine artificial intelligence with sensors to target the user’s intended touch.

How do these systems work?

Let’s see how the system is able to predict the touch of the user’s target. The ToF camera or Time of Flight camera is used to scan the user’s fingers as the passenger moves towards touching the screen. An infrared light spectrum is used by ToF cameras to detect the motion of vehicles in a three-dimensional setup. A vision-based system can be incorporated with a predictive touchscreen – the time taken for the light to bounce back from the hand is used to detect the position of the hand.

Four methods have been deployed to tell the user whether the right choice has been made – highlighting objects, resizing objects, changing colors, and making objects appear brighter or haptic (including the use of ultrasound to “feel” involves doing”” of a finger touching the screen). Based on research by scientists such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), it was observed that the best way to tell the user is to enlarge and brighten the object.

Advantages of Predictive Touchscreen

There are many reasons why these systems were introduced in the first place. Those benefits include the following:

  • less distraction for the driver; Since the driver does not need to physically “touch” the screen, the driver does not need to focus on pressing the screen. Works for system driver.

  • According to research conducted by experts, the predictive touchscreen “reduces the workload, effort and duration of completing on-screen tasks in vehicles”. Less effort means less distraction for the driver.

  • Since the outbreak of the pandemic, there has been much talk about the germs that are on frequently touched surfaces such as dashboards and screens that contain information for drivers. No physical touch reduces the chances of infection for the driver or passenger.

  • Research shows that active contact between the screen and the driver’s fingers can be reduced by up to 50% with predictive touchscreens.
