Premier League: Leicester Thrash Sorry Newcastle, West Ham Hold By Burnley

Leicester still left Newcastle in the Premier League relegation zone with a 4-0 defeat to the Magpies on Sunday, while West Ham’s Champions League ambitions were dented by a 0-0 draw at Burnley.

despite being hit by coronavirus Outbreak that left Brendan Rodgers without seven players, Fox gave Eddie Howe another reminder of the task he faces to keep Newcastle in the top flight as Yuri Tielemann struck King Power twice.

Howe will be able to call on the resources of the Saudi Sovereign Wealth Fund in the January transfer window and results elsewhere later this week mean they are left with just three points of safety.

But Newcastle face Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United in their next three matches and, in this form, would be lucky to survive that run without another serious hit to their goal difference.

Leicester had won just two of their last nine matches in all competitions and were knocked out of the Europa League by Napoli on Thursday. However, he got the break he needed to take the lead before half-time, when James Madison made contact with Javier Manquillo to win the penalty.

Watching Jamie Vardy off the bench, Tielemans took responsibility for opening the scoring seven minutes before half time.

Patson Daka’s form has seen him earn his place in the Premier League ahead of Vardy in recent weeks and the Zambian’s selfless pass from Harvey Barnes has seen him roll in his seventh goal of the season to double Leicester’s lead. It was the easiest thing to do.

Tielemann scored a fine team move for his second time of the afternoon before Madison’s fine finish eased Newcastle’s pain five minutes ahead of time.

The win propelled Leicester into eighth place and back in the fight for a top four spot, while West Ham wasted a chance to extend their advantage over the chasing pack. The Hammers have won just one of their last five league games as Nick Pope disappointed David Moyes’ men with a string of saves at Turf Moor.

West Ham are one point ahead of fifth-placed Manchester United, but Tottenham, who are out of action this weekend due to their own Covid outbreak, are just two points behind with two games in hand. A point also does little to aid Burnley’s hopes of survival as they finish 18th but now have only two points of safety.
