Despite Cristiano Ronaldo making an emotional scoring comeback, United were beaten 3-1 by Arsenal in the Premier League on Saturday and dropped six points from his rival in the race for a top-four spot.

Granite Xaka’s long-range, 70th-minute strike secured the victory for Arsenal in a wild game at Emirates Stadium, leading the home team 2–0 after 32 minutes – via goals by Nuno Tavares and Bukayo Saka. Ronaldo’s 100th Premier League goal before facing a joint fight launched by Se-.

The Portugal superstar, who missed a 4-0 loss to Liverpool on Tuesday mourning the death of his newborn son, raised his left hand and pointed to the sky after scoring in the 34th minute.

United were awarded a penalty in the 55th but Bruno Fernandes hit the post after his trademark stuttering run-up.

To make matters worse for Fernandes, it was his fault that allowed Xaka to take the goal and claim a crucial third goal for Arsenal, who climbed up to fourth from north London rivals Tottenham.

As for sixth-placed United, they have four games left of a miserable season that will end without trophies – for the fifth straight year – and see Ten Haag take over from Ralf Rangnik, the second of two interim managers the club has set up. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was fired in November.

Ten Haag has a major task on hand to rebuild United into the trophy-winning strength of old – Rangnik said on Friday that the team needed open heart surgery to contrast the cosmetic changes – and it was another worrying performance, Especially defensively by Liverpool after United’s molting.

The club’s captain Harry Maguire was dropped by Rangnick, due to a combination of the England defender’s recent form and the fact that he had received bomb threats at his home during the week.

Saka got injured in the middle of the second half but by then he had done his damage. It was his curling shot that was thrown straight at Tavares’ feet by David de Gea, who drove the ball from close home in the third minute.

Saka then scored a penalty for the second straight game – having done so in Wednesday’s 4-2 win over Chelsea – after being bundled out by Alex Telles.
