Heavy rains lashed several areas of Tamil Nadu on Wednesday and a low pressure area concentrated into a depression over the Bay of Bengal is likely to cross the coast by the evening of November 11.

A latest update from the Meteorological Department said that the weather system is likely to cross north Tamil Nadu coasts between Karaikal and Sriharikota, north of Puducherry and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts by the evening of November 11.

Intermittent, light to moderate rains lashed Tamil Nadu on Wednesday, gaining momentum by evening.

It became almost non-stop and heavy in many areas, especially the northern districts of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai and adjoining Chengalpet, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Villupuram.

“It is now raining extensively in Tamil Nadu. It intensified after 8 pm, especially in the northern regions,” an official of the Meteorological Department told PTI here.

Announcing the possible formation of a depression, the IMD bulletin said that the well marked low pressure area over central parts of south Bay of Bengal moved west-northwestwards and concentrated into a depression on Wednesday evening. Gaya.

It is located approximately 430 km east-southeast of Chennai and 420 km east-southeast of Puducherry.

It is very likely to move west-northwestwards and reach north Tamil Nadu coast by the morning of November 11, 2021.

Thereafter, it will continue to move west-northwestwards and cross north Tamil Nadu and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts near north of Puducherry between Karaikal and Sriharikota by the evening of 11 November 2021.

The IMD has warned of light to moderate, heavy, very heavy and very heavy rain at different places and at isolated places.

Such areas include North Coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, North Interior Tamil Nadu, South Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema and South Interior Karnataka.

The low pressure area that formed over southeast Bay of Bengal on November 9 became well marked on Wednesday morning.

Rain is expected from the weather system in Tamil Nadu for at least the next two days.

Rainfall is very likely to be isolated, heavy, very heavy and very heavy at isolated places and light to moderate at most places.

On Tuesday, there was a drop in rain in and around the northern areas. However, the Cauvery delta regions of Tamil Nadu and Karaikkal (Puducherry) received very heavy rains.

Nagapattinam tops the chart with 31 CMs, followed by Karaikkal (29 CMs) and Vedaranyam (25 CMs). Other delta regions, including Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Mannargudi, Mayiladuthurai and Pattukottai, also received heavy rainfall.
