Prince Harry says he warned Twitter CEO before January 6 capital riot

Prince Harry said he had warned Twitter Inc Chief Executive Jack Dorsey that his social media platform was allowing a coup ahead of the January 6 capital riots.

“Jack and I were emailing each other before January 6th, where I warned him that his platform was allowing a coup. That email was sent the day before and then it happened, and I followed that. Haven’t heard from,” Prince Harry said while speaking on a panel at RE: Wired, a conference hosted by the technology magazine Wired.

During the conference, the Duke of Sussex criticized social media companies including YouTube and Facebook for not doing enough to ban misinformation and hate speech.

“I’m not on social media,” said Prince Harry. “As long as things don’t change, it will stay the same.”

He described misinformation as a global humanitarian crisis that has destroyed lives and destroyed families. He said that most of the hate speech on Twitter about his wife Meghan Markle can be seen in 50 accounts.

“A small set of accounts is allowed to create a huge amount of chaos online,” Prince Harry said.

A Twitter representative could not be reached for comment.

On January 6, thousands of supporters of then-President Donald Trump, a Republican, fought police officers and seized the Capitol building for hours in an attempt to obstruct Congress’s certification of President Biden’s victory in the 2020 presidential election.

On January 8, Twitter permanently suspended Mr Trump’s account, citing the risk of further instigating violence following the earlier attack on the Capitol.

Mr Trump has denied taking responsibility for the riots. He was impeached by the House in January for inciting rebellion, and was acquitted in the Senate in February.
