Center requests IIT-Delhi to explore the possibility of setting up a campus in UAE

IIT-Delhi has been asked by the government to explore the possibility of setting up a campus in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Minister of State for Education Subhash Sarkar informed the Lok Sabha on August 1.

The Joint India-UAE Vision Statement, released on 18 February after a virtual summit between the leaders of the two countries, said: “…..the leaders agreed to set up an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in the UAE expressed”.

Subsequently, the Center has requested IIT, Delhi to explore the possibility of setting up a campus in UAE, the minister said.

He said, “IIT Delhi requested the Indian Ambassador to the UAE to arrange a meeting with the concerned UAE authorities. Accordingly, the Department of Education and Knowledge, Abu Dhabi (ADEK) was identified as the relevant UAE authority.”

In the first ADEK-IITD meeting, both sides made presentations about their respective organizations and conveyed their eagerness and enthusiasm to move forward with the project, Mr. Sarkar said.

During the second meeting, ADEK invited representatives from the Department of Economic Development and the Advanced Technology Research Council, who made presentations on Abu Dhabi’s economic vision and research priorities respectively, the minister said.

He said that IIT Delhi made a presentation on the model adopted by the old IITs for advising the new IITs and shared his experiences in mentoring IIT Ropar and IIT Jammu.
