Promoting ethanol as fuel: Gadkari

Government recently launched Ethanol 20 programme, under which it aims to achieve 20% ethanol blending in petrol by 2025

Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said on Friday that the government is giving special emphasis on ethanol as fuel.

“With 100% utilization of 20% blend of bioethanol, we will be able to save Rs 30,000 crore on import of fossil fuels. In addition, the use of ethanol blended petrol reduces emissions of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides by 40%,” he said.

The government recently launched the Ethanol 20 program, under which it aims to achieve 20% Ethanol blending in petrol by 2025.

“Currently, the ethanol economy is ₹20,000 crore, which I am targeting to grow to over ₹2 lakh crore. We are drawing inspiration from countries like Brazil that have been using ethanol in their transportation industry for over 60 years. They have a mandatory blending of 27% ethanol in petrol,” he said.

he reiterated that government was planning To introduce flex vehicles soon. Such vehicles will be able to operate on 100% bioethanol or 100% petrol.

Currently, the sugar industry contributes 90% of the demand for ethanol as a blended fuel, but the government is making efforts to increase the contribution of food-based distilleries, he stressed.

“Our efforts are on for capacity expansion and setting up of new distillery plants to meet the requirement of ethanol as a blended fuel in the country,” he added.
