Protesters entered Karnataka minister’s house, dragged by police

Activists allegedly associated with Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) workers were lathi-charged and barged into Karnataka Home Minister Araga Gyanendra’s residence in Bengaluru, demanding “justice” for a BJP youth wing leader whose was murdered. in Dakshina Kannada district.

Workers holding the organization’s flag stormed the premises of Shri Gyanendra’s bungalow at Jayamahal in Bengaluru and raised the slogan ‘We want justice’.

He also demanded a ban on the Popular Front of India and its affiliates, whom he accused of killing Hindutva activists and their growing influence in the state, especially in the coastal districts bordering Kerala.

The police tried to persuade them to go away but they remained adamant and staged a sit-in inside the premises raising slogans. Later, the activists tried to storm Mr. Gyanendra’s house.

Finally the policemen dragged him out of the bungalow. Some of them were lathi-charged for opposing the police’s bid.

Later, the activists were driven away from the spot in government vehicles and taken to JC Nagar police station where cases were registered against 30 of them.

Reacting to the incident, Home Minister Araga Gyanendra said that he has come to know that some youths identify themselves as ABVP workers and when he was in Shivamogga, they came to his house and demonstrated.

“The police have taken them into their custody. I have asked them (police) to investigate whether they are members of ABVP.

He said that if the protesters were ABVP activists, he would like to say that Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai has already told about the measures taken by the government such as handing over the Praveen Nettar murder case to the National Investigation Agency.

“I will call them and talk to them. They had come to protest against the fundamentalist forces. Some of them committed some excesses, which I have noticed. They come to me thinking that I am one of them and I also feel that they are my people.

Meanwhile, a group of ABVP activists staged a protest in Vijayapura demanding a ban on PFI and SDPI organizations for their alleged involvement in the killings of Hindutva activists in the state.

Praveen Nettar, district level functionary of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha in Dakshina Kannada, was killed on Tuesday night by motorcycle-borne assailants when he was on his way home after closing his poultry shop in Mangaluru.

Police sources, without giving details, said that two people have been arrested in this connection while one has been “in custody”.
