PSG star Neymar to miss 6-8 weeks with ankle injury

Paris Saint-Germain said on Monday that Neymar is expected to be sidelined for six to eight weeks following a ligament damage in his left ankle. The Brazilian star was in tears after being injured in the final minutes of Sunday’s 3-1 win in Saint-Etienne. “Investigations performed last night confirm that Neymar Jr. has a sprained left ankle and ligament damage,” PSG said in a statement. Neymar started 13 of the last 15 matches. He suffered another long absence for PSG this season after four years of injury in France, but landing awkwardly after a challenge from Saint-Etienne’s Yvan Macon.

The 29-year-old posted a video on Monday wearing a pressotherapy boot on his left leg.

“These runs of misfortune are part of an athlete’s life,” he said on Instagram on Sunday. “That’s the way now, you have to pick yourself back up and move on. I’ll be back better and stronger.”

Neymar should return in time for the Champions League last 16 in mid-February. PSG are guaranteed to advance as runners-up to Group A behind Manchester City.

Mauricio Pochettino’s team is 12 points ahead of Rennes in Ligue 1 with 13 wins from 15 matches.

Brazil has already qualified for next year’s World Cup in Qatar, meaning it is unlikely to return for games against Ecuador and Paraguay on January 27 and February 1.

PSG also announced that Marco Verratti has resumed training ahead of Wednesday’s match against third-placed Nice at home. The Italian midfielder has missed the last two matches due to a thigh problem.
