Punjab: AAP government transfers IPS officer who took action against illegal sand mining, shouts of opposition

Taking a dig at the newly-elected Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which had vowed to stamp out illegal mining from Punjab, opposition parties questioned the transfer of a senior IPS officer a week after a gang of illegal sand miners was busted.

The state government on Friday issued transfer orders of 13 senior superintendents of police (SSPs), including Dhuman H Nimbale. He was kicked out of Hoshiarpur within a week after an alleged gang of illegal sand miners was busted and one of the biggest cash seizures of Rs 1.53 crore took place.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had promised strict action against illegal sand mining during the assembly elections and during his election campaign after assuming office.

Nimbale’s transfer has given the opposition firepower against AAP. Former Congress and AAP leaders have questioned the commitment of the state government to end the problem of sand mafia.

Posted in Muktsar, Nimbale has an impeccable track record, is known to have fought the sand mafia and has been transferred 18 times in eight years. Earlier, his last two transfers took place during the Congress-led government and coincided with the crackdown on illegal sand mining in Tarn Taran and Moga.

He ordered registration of over 100 FIRs in illegal sand mining cases during his tenure as SSP of Tarn Taran, Moga and Hoshiarpur.

After the AAP-led government took over, he cracked down on sand miners posing as government officials, who were allegedly collecting “illegal taxes” from truck drivers.

Punjab Congress leader Pratap Singh Bajwa expressed surprise over the recent transfer of Hoshiarpur SSP. In a tweet, he said, “Instead of ‘Badlav’ (change) as promised by AAP, the officer is awarded ‘Badli’ (transfer). Breaking the sand mining gang by confiscating Rs 1.53 crore of SSP of Hoshiarpur.” After being transferred. Shocking.” (sic)

Congress MLA Pargat Singh said the AAP government transferred an officer who dared to register a case against the mining mafia.

“AAP Govt has transferred Hoshiarpur SSP @dhruman39 who dared to register a case against mining mafia. He had busted a goonda-tax racket and recovered ₹1.53 crore in cash 5 days back. Instead of encouraging such honest officers, the Bhagwant Mann government is transferring them. I hope this does not change,” Pargat Singh said.

Former Patiala MP Dr Dharamveer Gandhi also targeted the AAP government on Twitter. Questioning Nimbale’s transfer, Dr Gandhi shared Pargat Singh’s tweet with details of the illegal sand mining racket busted by a police officer a few days back.
