Form of words:

Chandigarh: The Punjab Assembly on Thursday passed a resolution against the Centre’s notification increasing the jurisdiction of the Border Security Force, calling it an “insult” to the state police and demanding its withdrawal.

In the absence of only two BJP members of the state assembly, the House unanimously passed a resolution to “reject” the Centre’s order.

The central government last month amended the BSF Act to authorize the Border Security Force to conduct searches, seizures and arrests within 50 kms from the existing 15 kms from the International Border in Punjab, West Bengal and Assam.

Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa presented the proposal.

It states that Punjab is the land of martyrs, they have made exemplary sacrifices in the freedom struggle of our country.

“Punjab Police is a unique patriotic force which has contributed immensely in maintaining the unity and integrity of the country. As per the Constitution of India, maintaining law and order is the responsibility of the state government and the Punjab government is fully competent for this purpose.

“The decision of the Central Government to increase the jurisdiction of the Border Security Force (BSF) from 15 km to 50 km is an expression of distrust towards the state police and the people of Punjab. This is an insult to them too,” the resolution said.

It further said that the central government should have consulted the state before taking such a big decision, adding that the law and order situation in Punjab is completely under control and there is no need to expand the BSF’s jurisdiction. .

“All the political parties of Punjab have unanimously condemned the decision of the Central Government and demanded that the Central Government should withdraw the notification dated 11.10.2021 issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India.

Therefore, the Punjab Legislative Assembly unanimously resolves that a resolution set aside the notification of the Central Government in this regard may be passed.

Randhawa termed the Centre’s notification to increase the jurisdiction of the BSF as an attack on the federal structure. He also said that the members of the House should meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the issue.

Akali leader Bikram Singh Majithia told the House that the Congress-led government in the state should take a decision that the Punjab Police would not cooperate with the BSF beyond 15 km.

Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi sought the support of all political parties on this issue and said that it is a joint fight.
