Punjab Assembly Speaker announces Rs 1 lakh for not burning stubble to villages in his constituency

Punjab Minister Kultar Singh Sandhwan said that burning of paddy stubble has harmful effects on the environment as well as loss of soil fertility.

To discourage stubble burning in his constituency, Punjab president Kultar Singh Sandhwan on Sunday announced that he would give Rs 1 lakh to every gram panchayat where farmers give up the practice. An official statement here on Sunday said the amount would be given from their discretionary quota.

AAP MLA Sandhwan represents the Kotkapura Assembly constituency. Sandhwan said that burning of paddy straw has a harmful effect on the environment and also affects the fertility of the land.

He said that according to the principles of Gurbani, the people of Punjab love nature the most. “As people are becoming aware about the harmful effects of stubble burning, they are giving up this trend,” according to the statement.

He said that the day was not far when the people of the state would give up this practice completely. According to the statement, Sandhwan had felicitated those who did not burn paddy straw last week.

“It was a unique initiative of its kind. In this ceremony, 18 farmers of Faridkot district, 13 from Moga, 10 from Sangrur, one from Rupnagar, 10 from Gurdaspur and seven from Ludhiana and Barnala were honored. He also appealed to the farmers to plant more and more saplings to protect the environment.
