Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on June 2 ordered a probe into alleged embezzlement of funds and other defaults due to financial crunch at Punjab Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), a premier health institute in the Doaba region.

Presiding over the 37th Governing Body meeting of PIMS Society in Chandigarh, Mr. Mann said, “Financial crisis in this apex institution is a matter of grave concern and the State Government cannot sit with it and the health services in the State are at risk. This conspiracy to cast cannot be allowed. ,

An official release quoting Mr Mann said it was surprising that there had not been a single meeting of the governing body in the last six years – as he tried to corner previous governments on their performance.

“There have also been several loopholes pointing to serious scams,” Mr. Mann said. Mr Mann said that those responsible for these lapses and embezzlement would not be spared and strictest action would be taken against them. The CM said the investigation would be done within the stipulated time period “in a fair, transparent and result oriented manner”.

Mr. Mann said that the time has come that decisive action should be taken against all those who are responsible for misappropriation of public funds, due to which serious financial crisis has arisen in the institution in Jalandhar. He said that the institute located at the heart of Doaba region can act as a catalyst for providing quality health facilities to the people.

The Chief Minister said that PIMS was already equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure and efforts would be made to develop it into a world class medical institution. He said that the Punjab Government would leave no stone unturned in its development and would soon prepare a detailed roadmap for the revival of the institute. He assured his cooperation to the Governing Council for the efficient running of the institute.

He said that his government is committed to provide quality health services to the people and is already making efforts in this regard.
