Punjab CM Mann meets Amit Shah in Delhi

Mann discusses self-styled Sikh preacher Amritpal Singh’s recent “mobilisation” of pro-Khalistan supporters and plans to crack down on these subversive elements.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi on Thursday to discuss the law and order situation in Punjab. This comes after Khalistani sympathizers stormed the Ajnala police station.

Both the leaders discussed better coordination between the State and the Center on the issue of law, order and security.

According to News18 sources, Mann discussed the recent “mobilisation” of pro-Khalistan supporters of self-styled Sikh preacher Amritpal Singh and plans to crack down on these subversive elements.

Mann also put the issue of stalled Rural Development Fund before the Home Minister.

The Home Minister talked about the gangsters caught in the past and the security threats coming from Pakistan. Sources said these included drug trafficking, drone issue and other prevailing issues along the Indo-Pak border.

Recent clashes in Punjab

This happened when Amritpal Singh and his supporters clashed with police at Ajnala police station in Amritsar carrying swords and guns for the release of one of their associates on 23 February.

Six policemen, including an officer of the rank of superintendent of police, were injured in the clash.

In another incident on 8 February, protesters demanding the release of Sikh prisoners clashed with the Chandigarh Police at the Chandigarh-Mohali border, leaving over 30 personnel injured.

Prior to holding discussions with the Punjab CM, the Home Ministry along with intelligence and investigative agencies including IB, RAW and NIA took stock of the situation in Punjab.

According to sources, the agencies briefed about the increasing threat posed by pro-Khalistani outfits in Punjab and also updated about the activities of these groups in other countries.

News18 has learned that the recent developments in Punjab and the Khalistani movement were also discussed with its new leaders.
