Punjab Congress to approach high command to expel Capt Amarinder’s wife

The day former Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh met the Prime Minister Narendra Modi In Delhi, the Punjab unit of the Congress decided to approach the party high command and demanded the expulsion of his wife and Patiala MP Preneet Kaur from the party for “anti-party activities”.

In a meeting chaired by Punjab affairs in-charge Harish Chaudhary, it was decided to approach the top leadership of the party. Though the meeting was organized to mobilize party cadre for the September 4 rally in Delhi against rising inflation and for ‘Bharat Jodi Yatra’, the leaders and MLAs also raised the issue of “discipline” in the party.

The meeting was also attended by Congress Legislature Party leader in the Assembly Pratap Singh Bajwa, Member of Parliament, former ministers and sitting and former MLAs. Angry over Kaur’s continuance in the party, some leaders have sought clarity on why the high command is delaying action against her.

The leaders told Chowdhary that despite giving show cause notices, no action has been taken against Kaur for “anti-party activities”. A leader who attended the meeting said, “The party in-charge assured those attending the meeting that such leaders and their activities are being closely investigated.” However, Kaur has consistently denied involvement in any anti-party activities.

According to sources, Choudhary also told the leaders that the high command was upset over the ongoing squabbles within the party and public statements by the leaders against each other. He said that though Choudhary did not name anyone, it was believed that he was reacting to Sukhpal Khaira’s public statement against Punjab Congress chief Raja Warring.

Sources further said that the meeting also referred to the social media outrage of Abohar MLA Sandeep Jakhar against the Punjab Pradesh Congress chief. Sunil Jahkar’s nephew Sandeep, who recently joined the BJP, had recently tweeted targeting Waring. “Punjab Congress President’s arrogance is earned when you publicly reprimand a senior leader like Khaira and are then expected to be respected by the cadre,” he had tweeted.

It is learned that the PPCC chief had asked for strict action against all leaders, including the MP, for “anti-party activities”.
