Punjab government will procure moong at MSP, farmers will have to sow paddy variety PR-126 or Basmati in the same field. Chandigarh News – Times of India

Chandigarh: Chief Minister of Punjab Bhagwant Mannu On Friday, the Minimum Support Price (MSP) was announced on the Moong (Lentil) crop to promote crop diversification across the state and save groundwater.
The Chief Minister assured the farmers sowing moong that the state government would buy every grain of their crop, provided they had to sow paddy PR-126 variety or basmati in the same field after harvesting of moong as both these crops were ripe. It takes very little time. And it requires less water as compared to other varieties of paddy.
The MSP for Moong is Rs 7,275 per quintal and it is being cultivated in an area of about 77,000 acres as against 50,000 acres last year.
“This is the first time that any government has assured farmers to buy moong at MSP. This will enable farmers to supplement their income by sowing another crop in between the wheat-paddy cycle,” the chief minister said.
He also announced that the Punjab government would procure Basmati at remunerative price to ensure market price stabilization to avoid any loss to the farmers.
The Chief Minister further said that such a step would eventually motivate the farmers to cultivate less water consuming varieties of paddy including Paddy PR-126 and Basmati to check the rapidly depleting water level in the State.
The Punjab Chief Minister has already announced a financial assistance of Rs 1,500 per acre to the direct sowing farmers of paddy.
