Putin orders Russian military to start beefing up in 2023

Moscow Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered the Russian military to increase the size of the country’s armed forces to 137,000 amid Moscow’s military crackdown in Ukraine.

Putin’s decree, signed on Thursday, did not make it clear whether the military would strengthen its ranks by drafting larger numbers of soldiers, increasing the number of volunteer soldiers, or using a combination of both.

The Kremlin has said that only volunteer contract troops participate in “special military operations” in Ukraine, rejecting claims that it was considering a wider mobilization.
