Qatar is hosting the Men’s Football World Cup, but at the same time a very different competition is also taking place in the country. Camels from the Gulf countries are participating in what is called the “Camel Beauty World Cup”, in which long-legged beauties compete to be the most attractive. According to news agency Reuters, the event is being organized at the Qatar Camel Mazayen Club in Ash-Shahaniyah. The participating camels are divided into different categories based on their age and breed.
“The idea is similar to the Football World Cup, we did the Camel Beauty World Cup,” said Hamad Jaber Al Athaba, chairman of Mazayen Club. told Reuters,
During the event, the camels, who were constantly chewing gum, were seated indoors in front of spectators and coffee and sweets were enjoyed.
Competition is fierce among the different types of camels.
“Black camels are judged according to the shape of the body and the location of the head and ears. But with the Magahir-type camel, we look for proportionality and the ears should droop down, not stand straight, instead Except the way the mouth is curved,” Mr Al Athba said.
But before the competition begins, experts examine the camels using X-rays to avoid cheating and check that the animals have not undergone any surgical correction.
Last year, a case of fraud came to light after 43 entrants in a camel beauty pageant in Saudi Arabia were disqualified for botox injections and other cosmetic enhancements.
Organizers have in recent years cracked down on cosmetic enhancements, a malpractice that continues to flourish amid stiff competition and despite heavy penalties.
Enhancements are made to make the camels’ lips and their humps larger in size – key features in the competition.
