Queen Elizabeth II dies at 96, son Charles now king

Buckingham Palace said on Thursday that Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-reigning monarch in British history, has died at the age of 96.

As soon as the Queen died, the throne passed immediately and without ceremony to the heir, Charles, the former Prince of Wales. Charles is the oldest British royal in history to ascend the throne. For comparison, his mother, Elizabeth, was crowned queen at the age of 26.
