Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti 2022: From Gitanjali to Chokher Bali, the most famous literary works of ‘Gurudev’

Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti 2022: Songs, anthems, poems, plays, short stories and many other literary works of the great Rabindranath Tagore are still invaluable to millions of people. Born in Calcutta on May 7, 1861, Rabindranath was the youngest son of Devendranath Tagore, the leader of the Brahmo Samaj.

At the age of 8, Rabindranath Tagore started writing poems and less than a decade later, released his collection to the world under his pseudonym ‘Bhanusimha’. He is also the person behind the national anthems of three different countries. Jana Gana Mana of India, ‘Amar Sonar Bangla’ of Bangladesh and ‘Sri Lanka Mata’ of Sri Lanka. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913.

On his birth anniversary, let’s read about some of his most famous literary works:

Gitanjali

Rabindranath Tagore was the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913 for his collection of selected poetry titled Gitanjali. (Representational image: Shutterstock)

The theme of the poem is devotion to God. Gitanjali is also known as ‘Geet Prasad’. Originally written in Bengali, later translated into English, the collection contributed to his Nobel Prize winnings.

‘Where the mind is fearless and the head is held high; where knowledge is free;

Where the world is not torn to pieces by narrow domestic walls’

These lines were of great meaning and devotion to the Almighty.

Chokher Bialik

Chokher was the subject of Bali’s extra-marital affair. It is a novel whose story has desires, passions, relationships and dreams that remain unfulfilled. A well presented dynamic of the complexities and meanings of humans and their relationships. It is also called ‘grain of sand’.

postmaster

Very simple story of a young man who lives in a city and works as a postmaster in a remote area to make two ends meet. But the story also portrays feelings like loneliness and the search for meaning of everything in the world.

White

Gora is the largest and most complex of the 12 novels written by Tagore. The book is said to be a mirror and analysis of diverse societies, but the social issues it talks about are still very relevant to the current state of the world.

Kabuliwala

The impressive story of a salesman from Afghanistan who lived and worked in Calcutta. The story depicts an extremely emotional bond between him and the narrator of the story’s five-year-old daughter.

shesher kobita

Once a loose collection, it was properly sorted from Bhadro to Choitro in a magazine called Probashi in 1928, and later in a book the following year. It is an epic love story, a saga, which portrays a platonic love between a middle-aged couple. It was later translated into English and named The Last Poem and Farewell Song.

ghar baire

Set in the backdrop of the Swadeshi movement, the novel is psychological and paints a picture of a much deeper and unseen meaning of life with three different individuals and their struggles.

incapacitated

The novel talks about the time when men were designated to earn bread and women were allotted to cook bread. There was a time when men were allowed to leave home for further education and jobs and even women were motivated to take on their responsibilities towards family, home and kitchen.
